It’s a new year, it’s a new day.  Since our last newsletter there have been lots of changes.  First of all, the obvious is our new county executive. Congratulations to Ed Mangano and his team on a great victory.  Other notable winners are, our own Joe Belesi, who won the 14th LD out in Farmingdale and Rose Walker who won the 17th LD in Bethpage.  The Republicans are also now in the majority in the County Legislature, lead by Majority Leader Peter Schmitt in the 12th LD in Massapequa and Deputy Majority leader John Ciotti in the 3rd LD in Elmont. I’d like to congratulate all the winners on both sides of the isle. The Executive board has met several times, since the election, with County Executive Mangano and his team. We are forging a positive relationship with them which should work well for all sides going forward.

In other SOA news, everyone has finely seen the April 09 raise in their checks. Active members have received their retro checks (for April 2008 raise), the retired members, from 2008 and 2009 are also receiving their checks.  I’d like to thank everyone assigned to P&A. They have been working very hard since June trying to implement all of our contract changes, as well as calculating the many retro checks for our active and retired members.  For the newly retired members, P&A has advised me that they do notify the State Pension System every time a check for pensionable salary is issued.  I’d advise that each member also write a letter (see below), advising the State Pension System of a change in their pensionable salary and enclose documentation.  I am advised that the recalculation of your pension could take 10 to 11 months, and yes you would then receive a retro check from the State.

This past November, the SOA held an open enrollment in our office, for supplemental life insurance (Active members only).  Lois Riccobono our broker for The Standard Life Insurance Co. was pleased with the positive turnout.  The New Insurance plan is in place and is being deducted from your bi-weekly checks. Lois also oversees our retired dental/vision coverage. If you need an enrollment form call the office.

The SOA annual Golf outing is scheduled.  It is once again going to be held at Bethpage State Park on Sept. 15th, with a 1330hr shotgun start, on the Blue course.  The Outing will be followed by a cocktail hour, dinner and raffles at the Carlyle on the Green. Further information will follow in the Spring newsletter.
